The new picnic table is ready for use at Applegate; let’s hope the weather allows it to get plenty of use this year.
We love the choice that The Isle of Skye offers from art cafes to Michelin starred restaurants:
‘Despite being some 100 miles from the nearest major city, the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Hebrides has developed one of the UK’s most intriguing (if not isolated) food scenes. As of September, it also boasts two Michelin-starred restaurants– more than Manchester and Liverpool combined’ – munchies vice.com.
Some of our favourites include:
Café Arriba in Portree – great coffee, food and views along with a lovely sense of humour – ‘Unattended children will be given espresso and a free kitten!’ or ‘Today’s Offer – Buy ANY 2 drinks and pay for them both.’
Ellishadder Art Café is on the North East coast and the freshly prepared menu is fabulous. We love the garden with its free-range hens and delicious herbs and flowers for your salads.
For a treat how about Kinloch Lodge or the The Three Chimneys? Lunch out is a great way to celebrate a special occasion. At Kinloch you can book a workshop, which includes breakfast, a morning in Marcello Tully’s professional kitchen, experiencing how lunch is prepared and then to round off the experience you enjoy the lunch!
Café Sia in Broadford boasts a wood fired pizza oven – made in Tuscany. The pizzas are amazing and if you time it well, a take out to enjoy when you get back home to Applegate is perfect.
Broadford fish & chips is another great choice. If you love fresh fish then Sea Breezes in Portree Harbour is a must. Booking is essential as it’s a small restaurant but it’s certainly busy.
We had a lovely drink and meal at The Uig Hotel the other evening – a prawn cocktail starter special which was 5 huge local langoustines!
Last, but certainly not least we couldn’t finish before we’ve mentioned The Isle of Skye baking Company (Portree & Broadford) The quality of the bread (including gluten free), cakes, soup, cheese platters is amazing. But maybe it’s time to take away some of their goodies and enjoy dining out at Applegate. How about on the picnic table?
The biggest dilemma will be deciding where to go, we have only mentioned a fraction of the places. We love the variety and quality on Skye too and the opportunity each holiday to explore new places. On our list this summer are Skye Pie Café and The Red Roof Café.
